Welcome to the second of the weekly blogs. Unfortunately Ratopolis headquarters is one pet down this week, for a couple weeks now, my Oranda, Aragorn has had a fungus disease which i found out to be dropsy. Dropsy is extremely hard to cure and although i did try and cure it and help him in every way i could, in the end it was kinder to let him go. It does mean that Sauron is now on his own in the tank but hopefully in a couple weeks we can get him a new friend.
The other animals are all fine, nothing too exciting happened this week, Durotan decided he was going to go up on the windowsill where he's not meant to be and pushed a plantpot off, which was a nightmare to clean up. The rabbit redecorated her cage within 12 hours of me cleaning it out, apparently i put too much straw in her bed and she would rather it was all over her cage, including in her litter tray on top of the litter.
I'm working on my first "meet my pets" youtube video, which will be about my giant african land snails and millipede, i'm hoping to have it finished in the next few days, although i'm still getting used to the editing software!
That's about all that happened this week, nothing too exciting at all, tune in every week for updates
Happy sunday! Welcome to the first of weekly blog posts! This post will give you an insight of things to come at Ratopolis. There will be exciting things happening this year. The first thing is.......valentines day! Personally i am not a huge fan of valentines day, but i understand why some people do partake in it. I will only be doing one valentine hammock this year and it will be in the shape of a love heart. There will be different fabric options available.
The next big thing after valentines day will be easter, which there will be lots of fabric options available for. The shapes i will be trying out will be an egg shape and a hammock with bunny ears, i always love to hear people's opinions and what people would like to be available.
Another thing that will hopefully be taking off this year is goodie boxes/packages for rats/small animals which will range in size from extra small to extra large and the price will range from £15-£50. Inside will be an array of treats, chew toys, toys, hammocks and in the bigger ones they will have a hanging rope/toy to hang in the cage. If you have any suggestions or if there's something you would like to see please let me know either by commenting or by letting me know on my facebook page.
I will also be doing some more youtube videos, so let me know which type of videos you'd like to see, whether it's behind the scenes at ratopolis, videos of my pets, or videos of hammock making, let me know and i'll do my best to accomodate.
I will also finally be starting the dog beds with removable covers this year, I've been planning to make the beds for quite a while now, but have never had the resources until now. Hopefully these will be underway by the summer
So it's been a while since i wrote a blog post so i thought i would give everyone an update on my furbabies. Unfortunately towards the end of 2016 I lost alot of my furbabies. Yuri, Orion, Cosmo and Dio have sadly passed away since my last post. i will do another post about my passed babies. The good news is i have now decided to focus 100% on making rat hammocks and branching into other pet beds, so i am now officially self employed and work from home. I will also be starting a maths course in the next few weeks so i will be very very busy!
Another good thing to happen was we took in 2 new furbabies. I often check websites like gumtree etc just to have a look, rarely finding anything. Well i found 2 rattie boys named Matt and Dave. Unfortunately their owner could no longer look after them so i decided to take them in and give them a forever home. Both boys are about a year and a half old, and in a strange coincidence, were bought from the same place as mal and wash. Dave is a blue rat who has turned white as he's gotten older. Dave is very very very sweet, he is incredibly tame and friendly, he likes to sleep in the hammocks and interact with the younger boys.
Matt is the biggest rat i've ever met, he's not fat, just big. He weighs in at a whopping 690 grams. Despite his size, Matt plays with the babies often. He is also very cuddly, every week at cleaning out time he loves to come and sit on me and he wants cuddles and pets, of course,he doesn't realise that actually that is not helpful. He is the biggest (literally!) sweetheart and is so good with all the other boys, despite his grumpy looking face.
Drogo and Durotan have come out of their shells alot in the months we've had them. Drogo is shy and quiet but playful. He doesn't like being picked up or touched but he'll happily climb all over people and take treats from them. His brother Durotan however is the complete opposite. He is the biggest pain in the ass i've ever had the pleasure of loving. He is very very very very playful, everything to him is a game. He loves to chase feet, hands and anything that moves, he crawls up my jumper,up my trousers,up my sleeves, pulls my ears, grabs my necklaces and tries to run away with them, he grabs rings, he bounces on the other boys and tries to get them to play even if they don't want to. Despite him being a pain, he's always my second heart rat. I love that little turdface so much it's unreal.
So as most of you know,as well as my 12 furry friends, i also have 9 non furries. I have 3 snakes, 2 giant african land snails, 2 fish, a millipede and a giant asian forest scorpion.
So at the moment there is currently 21 pets in our home, 12 of them are furry, i've done seperate posts for my furbabies and another for my other pets.
1 of the furbabies is Misty, our bunny. Misty came into our lives in September 2013. I had not long moved in with Dougie and i seen an advert for her on gumtree. She had blue eyes and was the tiniest, cutest thing i'd ever seen. At first Dougie said no but after almost 3 weeks of convincing he finally gave in. When we got her she could literally sit in one hand and she was extremely affectionate. She was a ball of energy and loved humans. As she grew older we realised she wasn't like a normal rabbit, as she came into adolescence she became aggressive and grumpy. So we decided to breed her and see if it would calm her down, while it did for a while, as soon as the babies were gone she went back to her grumpy self. So we got her speyed and she has calmed down alot since then but she doesn't like humans very much now.
The other 11 furries are rats, yep that's right, 11 rats!
Above are my boys, my 11 ratties. Everyday I am thankful for my little men. Unfortunately rats are surrounded by the stigma that rats are gross, disgusting, dirty animals that live in the sewers. Contrary to popular belief rats are incredibly clean and very very intelligent.
Let me tell you a little about my mischief. The oldest boy is Yuri, he's 3 years old. We got him from a breeder in Glasgow, as soon as i met him i instantly fell in love. He is such a sweet boy, he's always preferred humans to other rats. As you can see in the pic he has a tumour, he has two and while they do bother him, he is not ready to go yet. He is a very very special rattie to me.
Second oldest is Orion, Orion is roughly 2 years old. We got him from the adoption section at pets at home along with his brother who has since passed away. They were in the adoption section because Orion looks like a wild rat and nobody wanted him so we decided to take him home. He's never been keen on being handled, he will gladly climb all over you but on his terms. In his old age he's slowing down quite a bit and has some fur loss.
Dio is the next oldest, roughly 2 years old, we found him on a trupu to pets at home, never went in looking for a rat but he was on his own. I couldn't leave him there by himself. Dio is a bit of a little monster, he likes to play but sometimes he's a little too rough for the little ones. He's a very good escape artist and a master hider, he's always the last one in at playtime, sometimes running away from us like it's a game.
Han is roughly 1.5 years old, Han we got from the pets at home adoption section. We went in again not looking for another rat but spotted him and his brother. We asked about them and were told they were "biters". Dougie asked if he could put his hand in and see how they reacted, not one of them went for him at all. So we took him and his brother home. Han is very shy, he loves to snuggle up in the hammocks with a few of the other boys.
Cosmo is also about 1.5, he is also very shy. We got him from a lady off gumtree who bought him and his brother for her husband and son. They quickly lost interest so we got them and their cage for free. Cosmo is a really awesome rat, he loves to help me clean the cage every week, he'll grab a wipe and push it around the platform, then he'll get fed up and run and hide in the corner after he gets past the multiple barricades Doug puts up.
Wash is just over a year old. We got him and his brother on an impulse buy after visiting the pet store i used to work at and i couldn't leave without at least two. Now what can i tell you about Wash.......Wash is weird. Super weird. He is a massive wuss, he doesn't like another rat coming anywhere near him when he's cleaning himself or eating. If another rat comes near him when he's eating he'll squeal and bolt onto Dougie's shoulder. He's a very sweet but very very weird boy.Oh and he loves faces.
Mal is also just over a year old and is Washs brother. Mal is my heart rat, for those of you unsure what a heart rat is, it's when you have a stronger connection with one rat than you do with the others. In my eyes Mal is amazing, he is there for me through everything, if Dougie isn't there, Mal is. He knows exactly when i need him, he is the most amazing rat in the world,I love him to pieces. He is the dominant rat in the cage so he is a little aggressive which is very annoying sometimes.
Luke is almost a year old. We got him from Pets at home when we saw him and his brother Anakin. I just had to have a siamese rattie. Luke is the craziest rat i've ever met. He's constantly hyper, he doesn't know how to walk properly, he either walks or he bounces. He is incredibly adorable and loves humans, he's very very tame and is always one of the first to come out at playtime.
Anakin is also almost a year old and brother to Luke. Anakin is the complete opposite of his brother. He is laid back and extremely chilled out, if he was any more laid back he'd be horizontal. Anakin is a lovely little man, he is our most gentle rat, he has no qualms about being held or picked up or tickled.
Drogo is 8 months old, brother to Durotan. These two came from the pet store i used to work in after they had been in there for 6 months with no-one wanting them. A week of begging Dougie and we were taking them home. We haven't had them very long so they're still a bit shy but they're starting to come out their shells now. Drogo is a hyper ball of fluff. He is another one who is constantly bouncing, he's also constantly at the doors, he doesn't like being in the cage.
Durotan is also 8 months old and brother to Drogo. He's a little less hyper than his brother and doesn't mind being in the cage. He also really likes metal, whenever i have a metal necklace on he grabs it with his teeth and tried to run away with it. He likes to investigate glasses and faces too.
Hello! Most of you know me as Scribbles Rattus which is my facebook name. My real name is Tegan, I'm originally from Edinburgh, Scotland but i moved up to the north of Scotland in 2015. At the moment i live in a beautiful village called Burghead which is right on the coast of the Moray Firth so when i look out my window i see the sea. It's a beautiful place to live and an even better place to work.
I live with my long suffering boyfriend, Dougie. While he likes animals too they don't take over his life like they do mine. (pic of me and him when we first started going out on the right)
I used to work in a small family run pet shop. Unfortunately recently i got laid off because there wasn't enough work so i am now looking for a job. I have been around animals for as long as i can remember, i grew up in a house full of pets. My first dog was a mongrel, her name was Sandy and she was the sweetest little dog ever. Then when i got to age 12, my dad finally let me get a rabbit (i'd been begging him for one since i could speak) I was so excited to finally get a bunny, i remember the day i got her like it was yesterday. She was pure black with a white stomach and we had an incredible bond. For 9 years she was there. She was there for me through everything, she was my best friend. Throughout her life i had various hamsters, gerbils and fish but she was always my number one. Unfortunately at the age of 9 she had a lump and died a few days after i took her to the vet. It was absolutely devastating losing her but shortly after i met Dougie and then we got our own little bunny.
Apart from making hammocks and cleaning out animals, i have a few other hobbies too. I'm a pc gamer, at the moment i'm playing alot of World of Warcraft. I'm also an avid archer, i've been doing archery since i was 12, so 13 years now. I've competed in 4 international competitions and many scottish and uk championships. Recently Dougie got into it too so it means we get to do something together other than gaming. (and it means i'm better than him at something for once! Although he is quickly catching up to me) I also like music, i listen to a wide variety, my collection goes from westlife to Amon Amarth. I also attempt to play instruments too. I play the tin whistle (penny whistle to some) which i've been playing since i was 9,i've also been playing the guitar since i was 12, and i recently got a saxophone which i still have not learnt to play yet, although i have acquired a beginners book so i'm making slow progress!
Anyway, that's quite enough about me, i hope you enjoy my other posts :)
I make small animal beds, primarily rat hammocks.
